What is it?
The housing choice voucher program (Section 8) is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford private housing. Eligible families receive rent assistance vouchers which they can take to any residence that meets the program requirements. Housing choice vouchers are administered locally by public housing agencies.

What do you get?
A federal voucher that allows you to pay affordable rent when you rent a privately-owned residence. The amount you have to pay will be between 30 and 40 percent of your income.

How long do you get it?
As long as you continue to qualify.
